Ethical SEO
[]Ethical SEO is a description of how the work is done, not a badge that makes a provider trustworthy. A provider should be able to explain what will change, why it might help, what depends on someone else, and how the work will be checked.
The old image (a screenshot of search results) that accompanied the source article has been removed because the hosting domain is no longer available. It showed the search-result context in which this piece was originally written and was not evidence of current market size or search performance.
Tell the truth about the work
A responsible brief names the pages, systems, people, and decisions involved. It does not promise a number-one position, a first-page result, a fixed amount of traffic, or a fixed amount of revenue.
Search visibility depends on a system the provider does not control. Search engines change, competitors publish, the site may not implement recommendations, and a visitor may still decide that the offer is not right for them. A promise that hides those dependencies is not made more credible by calling itself ethical.
The Google SEO Starter Guide is a useful inspectable reference for basic search guidance. It is guidance, not a guarantee of a result.
Put the user before the crawler
The work should make a page easier to understand and use. That can mean fixing navigation, clarifying a title, improving a product explanation, removing an indexing mistake, or making an interaction accessible.
Do not create pages whose only purpose is to catch a phrase. Do not hide text, disguise advertising as editorial material, copy another site’s work, or make a claim on the search page that the destination does not support.
Accessibility is part of responsible publishing, not a ranking trick. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines describe testable guidance for making web content more usable by people with different needs.
Give credit and disclose influence
Use original work where permission is required. Attribute sources, images, data, quotations, and contributions in a way that a reader can understand. If a link is paid for, sponsored, exchanged, or otherwise influenced, follow the relevant disclosure and platform rules rather than presenting it as independent editorial judgement.
A useful reference is something another person chooses to make because the underlying page is worth sharing. It is not a vote that can be manufactured by placing the same text and link across a network of sites.
Automate carefully
Automation can help with repetitive checks, inventories, redirects, broken links, and drafts. It still needs an owner who can inspect the output. A script that creates hundreds of thin pages or sends untargeted messages at scale does not become responsible because it runs consistently.
Keep access to client accounts and data proportionate. Use the client’s own analytics, search, advertising, and hosting accounts where possible, document who has access, and return usable records when the work ends. Do not make a client dependent on an opaque report or an account only the provider can reach.
Ask what a provider can show
Before work starts, ask for:
- the specific pages and systems in scope;
- the recommendations the provider can implement and the changes someone else must make;
- the sources or tests behind important claims;
- the reporting method, query set, market, and review cadence;
- the risks, constraints, and work that is explicitly out of scope;
- the contract’s ownership, access, attribution, and cancellation terms.
A provider that cannot answer these questions may still be able to sell a package. That is different from demonstrating careful work.
Know what ethical SEO cannot solve
SEO cannot repair an unsuitable product, an unclear offer, a broken fulfilment process, or a lack of capacity to serve new demand. It cannot make an untrue claim true. It cannot guarantee that a searcher will choose one result over another.
The practical test is simple: can the work be explained to the site owner and the reader without hiding the method? If not, reject it. A clear limitation is more useful than a confident promise.
