How to recognise a good SEO firm

Updated in 2026: Tools and search features have changed since the original article. The qualities that protect a client from bad work are mostly behavioural.

A good SEO firm explains the diagnosis, prioritises work against business outcomes, protects your accounts and reputation, and reports uncertainty honestly. It does not guarantee positions or hide behind proprietary language.

It starts with your situation

The firm should ask about customers, products, margins, sales cycles, technical ownership, previous migrations and measurement limits before prescribing deliverables. An audit that ignores the business can produce a technically tidy backlog with no useful priority.

It shows its reasoning

Recommendations should name the affected pages, observed problem, expected reader or crawler impact, implementation owner and way to verify the change. “Improve authority” is not a plan. “Publish the test method and raw results customers ask for before purchase” is inspectable.

It works safely

You should own Search Console, analytics, advertising and website accounts. Grant the minimum access needed and remove it when the engagement ends. The firm should disclose paid placements, automation and subcontractors, and avoid tactics that put your domain at risk.

It reports outcomes and uncertainty

Expect reporting on qualified traffic and business actions, supported by crawl and visibility diagnostics. Expect caveats around attribution, seasonality and search changes. A firm that never finds an inconclusive result is probably simplifying the story.

Questions for references

Do not ask only whether rankings increased. Ask whether the team shipped work, communicated trade-offs, respected access, adapted when evidence changed and left the client with usable documentation.

Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO recommends a technical and search audit and warns that nobody can guarantee first place. The best firm earns trust by making its work understandable enough to challenge.
