How to use competitor analysis in SEO

Updated in 2026: The original article focused mainly on competitors’ backlinks. Links still matter, but they are only one part of deciding where you can compete credibly.

SEO competitor analysis should reveal the standard a page must beat, not provide a list to copy. The useful competitors are the pages that already appear for the searches your audience uses, not necessarily the companies discussed in your sales meetings.

Start with the result, not a tool score

Search several representative queries and record what the leading results are trying to do. Are they guides, product pages, directories, videos, calculators or local listings? That pattern tells you what searchers appear to need and whether your planned page matches the task.

For each serious competitor, compare:

  • the question or decision the page answers;
  • the first-hand evidence it provides;
  • the depth needed to complete the task;
  • its publication and update context;
  • internal and external links that help people verify or continue;
  • page experience on a real mobile device;
  • the reputation of the organisation behind it.

A backlink tool can reveal sources worth understanding, but a high count is not an instruction to reproduce the same links. Some links are earned editorial references; others are old directories, syndicated copies or spam.

Look for a defensible gap

The best opportunity is not always a missing keyword. It may be a missing comparison, an untested assumption, an outdated process, a tool nobody has built or an audience the existing pages ignore.

Write down one sentence before producing anything: “This page will be more useful because…” If the answer is only “it will be longer” or “it will use the keyword more often”, there is no strategy yet.

Judge the cost honestly

Some results are dominated by organisations with years of evidence, specialist teams and recognised products. That does not make the query impossible, but it changes the investment and timescale. You may get further by answering a narrower, higher-intent question where your experience is unusually relevant.

Competitor research should end with a choice: compete directly, narrow the problem, use a different format, or spend the effort elsewhere. Copying what already ranks only makes another interchangeable page.
